Project Description The State Sports Facilities is a recent project which aimed to provide a number of sports with facilities that better meet their existing and future needs. Major Projects Victoria (MPV) managed the project on behalf of its client, Sports and Recreation Victoria (SRV). The State Government committed over $50 million which delivered new and improved facilities for sporting clubs and the wider community.
 
The venue for the athletic centre is at Lakeside Oval (aka Bob Jane Stadium) in Albert Park. The venue provides a new consolidated home for athletics in Victoria with the development of facilities for training and competition at all levels.

As well as administration facility for athletics entities and the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS). The 1926 heritage grandstand has been restored as part of this project and has become the new home of the Victorian Institute of Sport. New training facilities have also been provided under this scheme.
 
Lakeside Oval is the home of the South Melbourne Football Club (SMFC), and they also benefitted from upgrades to their competition and administration facilities as part of the project. In addition to the redevelopment of Lakeside Oval, the project also involved upgrades within Albert Park. These upgrades include improved training fields for soccer and touch football, warm-up and training facilities for athletics, a new pavilion for the soccer and rugby fields and a new public toilet to serve visitors to the park.
