Hobart Real Tennis Club

Location Hobart TAS
Project Completion 2002
Project Size 200m2

Project Description Located on Davey Street, the Hobart Real Tennis Club is among the oldest of only four such clubs in Australia. The project involved reworking and bringing together two heritage listed structures, dating from c1875. A new entrance and amenities pavilion with accessible roof terrace is nestled between the two existing structures.

The pavilion is conceived as a lightweight addition: a transparent skin behind a timber trellis-like screen. The geometry of the timber screen reflects the detail of the existing buildings, while also recalling the unique timber racquets used for the sport. The screen provides sunshading and supports an existing grape vine planted in 1974 by world champion Pierre Etchebaster.
