Ballarat House

Location Ballarat VIC
Project Completion 2013
Project Size 490m2

Project Description

Located on a beautiful north facing sloping site on the outskirts of Ballarat, the Ballarat House is a single level courtyard residence in an established landscaped garden inclined northwards towards a creek.

The owners, living nearby wished to use the house as a B&B, possibly occupying it for themselves in the future. The house is formed by parallel gable roofed bedroom and service wings linked by a flat roofed living area and verandah on the north side and garage to the south.

A generous glazed hallway surrounds the courtyard connecting all spaces which are flexibly arranged to allow for later conversion. A separate enclosed lap pool pavilion is located close to the house’s side door.

The simple materials palette of rammed earth, terra cotta ’Mediterranean’ roof tiles, timber window framing and surrounding limestone paving were chosen in close consultation with the owners who were lovers of the forms, materials and colours of Italian regional architecture.

Wide verandahs surround the house and the supporting structure, and fascias are framed in galvanised mesh trellis allowing the house to eventually be surrounded by wisteria creeper.

The projects long term sustainable future is provided by solar collectors for the main house and solar pool heating together with grey water collection and reuse, and double glazing used throughout
